Life and memory

Cheyenne Angelina Raines was a 23-year-old woman and resident of Muncie, Indiana. She was a mother to three young children, aged 3 years, 2 years, and 3 months. At the time of her death, she was attempting to assert her independence by leaving an abusive relationship. She is remembered by her community as a young mother whose life was cut short while seeking safety.

Fatal incident

On the evening of May 10, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Cheyenne Raines informed Rylynn Davis that she was ending their relationship and leaving their home in the 2700 block of South Walnut Street. According to witness statements and surveillance footage, Davis pursued her, punching her in the head and dragging her by her feet along the sidewalk while she screamed for help. After forcing her back toward the residence, Davis allegedly produced a firearm and fired multiple rounds. Cheyenne Raines sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead. Two other bystanders or secondary victims (whose identities have not been publicly released) were also struck by gunfire but survived.

Aftermath

Rylynn Joshua Davis was apprehended by Muncie Police and booked into the Delaware County Jail in the early hours of May 11, 2026. He faces a total of 12 preliminary charges, including Murder, two counts of Attempted Murder, Kidnapping, Criminal Confinement, and Domestic Battery. Following the shooting, authorities discovered three children in the home covered in feces and dirt; consequently, Davis also faces charges of Neglect of a Dependent. The children were placed in the care of Child Protective Services. As of May 14, 2026, Davis remains in custody awaiting formal trial proceedings.

Prevention context

This case serves as a stark illustration of "separation violence," highlighting how the risk of lethality often peaks the moment a victim attempts to leave an abusive partner. The public nature of the initial assault underscores the critical but narrow window for bystander intervention and law enforcement response during rapid domestic escalations. Furthermore, the "deplorable" conditions in which the children were found emphasize the frequent and devastating overlap between intimate partner violence and severe child neglect within the home.
