Fatima Johnson case file and memorial story

This documented case file remembers Fatima Johnson while organizing the public record, timeline, and reporting context surrounding the case in Los Angeles, California.

On July 2, 2021, 53-year-old Fatima Johnson was murdered in her South Los Angeles apartment by her boyfriend, Darryl Lamar Collins. Collins bound Johnson's wrists and ankles, gagged her with duct tape, and left her to die of asphyxiation. He then stole her phone, jewelry, and car, rapidly pawning the items and selling the vehicle for drugs. Johnson's daughters and best friend discovered her body wrapped in a blanket on July 4, 2021, after she failed to show up for work. The killing occurred just 364 days after Collins was paroled under a youthful offender law for two 1995 stranger murders. In February 2026, Collins was convicted of first-degree special circumstance murder, and on March 20, 2026, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Fatal incident and reported circumstances

On July 2, 2021, Darryl Lamar Collins murdered Fatima Johnson inside her apartment in the 7600 block of South Western Avenue. During the attack, Collins bound Johnson's wrists and ankles, and placed duct tape over her mouth and nose to gag her. Johnson died of asphyxia and her body was rolled into a blanket. Following the murder, Collins stole Johnson's cellphone, jewelry, and her Lexus, pawning two of her necklaces and selling her vehicle for drugs within hours of her death. Johnson was discovered on July 4, 2021, when her daughters and best friend entered the apartment to check on her.

Aftermath and case developments

Darryl Lamar Collins was arrested and subsequently convicted in February 2026 of first-degree special circumstance murder for the killing of Fatima Johnson. On March 20, 2026, Los Angeles Superior Court sentenced Collins to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The prosecution was led by Deputy District Attorneys Katrina Anderson and Noelle Brown of the Los Angeles County DA's Family Violence Division. Because Collins committed the murder exactly 364 days after being released from prison for two prior 1995 homicides, Johnson's death has sparked significant public and political scrutiny regarding California's youthful offender parole laws and the systemic evaluation of violent offenders.

Prevention context

This case illustrates the extreme lethality risk posed by domestic violence offenders who have a documented history of severe, generalized violence. Collins had previously murdered two strangers, demonstrating a profound capacity for fatal violence before entering a relationship with Johnson. His release from prison after serving only half his sentence—reportedly over the objections of prosecutors—highlights potential systemic gaps in evaluating the danger violent parolees pose to intimate partners. Additionally, Collins's swift actions to sell Johnson's stolen vehicle for drugs suggests that active substance abuse disorders can serve as an immediate, volatile catalyst for lethal violence, compounding the danger to victims.

March 20, 2026: Man Sentenced to Life Without Parole After Killing Girlfriend Less Than a Year After Release for Two Other Murders

LOS ANGELES — Darryl Lamar Collins was sentenced today to life without the possibility of parole for the murder of his girlfriend Fatima Johnson — a killing that came just 364 days after he was released from prison for two previous murders. “Darryl Collins took three innocent lives. Today’s sentence isn’t just about punishment, it’s also about protection from this sociopath to ensure he will never walk free again,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. “This case shows exactly what can happen when someone with a history of extreme violence is released from prison early. We can only hope that three families who have experienced unimaginable loss find some measure of peace knowing he will never again be back in our communities.” Collins (dob 10/2/70) of Los Angeles was found guilty on Feb. 19 of first-degree special circumstance murder. He was sentenced by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Craig Veals at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Collins had previously been convicted of two separate murders in 1995 and was sentenced to two consecutive terms of 25 years to life. However, he was released after serving 25 years — half of his sentence — under youthful offender parole provisions enacted by the state legislature in 2017, raising the cutoff for youthful offender parole from age 23 to age 25. At the time of the earlier two killings, Collins was 24 years old. District Attorney Hochman stated: “Had the state legislature not changed the law in 2017, almost 20 years after Collins’ sentencing, raising the age cutoff from 23 to 25 for youthful offender parole, Collins would have been behind bars rather than on the street and able to senselessly and brutally take another innocent life.” On Sept. 17, 1995, 28-year-old Derrick Reese was using a payphone when Collins carjacked him. After taking the vehicle, Collins backed up and shot Reese at least twice, killing him. On Sept. 28, 1995, Collins entered a diner in Inglewood where 44-year-old Thomas Weiss was working as a cashier. Collins held Weiss at gunpoint and demanded money. When Weiss did not comply, Collins shot him in the face, killing him. Both victims were random strangers, murdered 11 days apart. On January 15, 1998, Collins was sentenced to 50 years to life imprisonment. On July 2, 2021, less than a year after his release from prison, Collins killed Johnson in her apartment in the 7600 block of South Western Avenue. Johnson, 53, was found by her daughters and best friend bound, gagged and wrapped in a blanket. Her cause of death was asphyxia due to neck pressure and possible smothering. Her wrists and ankles were tightly bound with shoelaces and duct tape, she was gagged with underwear, and duct tape was placed over her mouth and nose. Collins then stole her cell phone, jewelry and Lexus. Within hours of the murder, he pawned two of her necklaces and sold her vehicle for drugs. Johnson, a mother of six and grandmother of eight who worked in a nursing home, had been sober for eight years. She was pursuing her nursing license at the time of her murder. Case BA498678 was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Katrina Anderson and Noelle Brown of the Family Violence Division and investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department. “Thanks to the work of Deputy District Attorneys Katrina Anderson and Noelle Brown and our Family Violence Division, Darryl Collins will spend the rest of his life in prison and our communities are safer for it,” District Attorney Hochman said.

LA man gets life in prison without parole for killing girlfriend after 2 prior murders

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 55-year-old man convicted for murdering his girlfriend in South Los Angeles was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Darryl Lamar Collins, of Los Angeles, killed Fatima Johnson in her apartment in July 2021, a slaying that came just under a year after he was granted parole for two murders in 1995. Johnson's cause of death was asphyxia due to neck pressure and possible smothering, according to the L.A. County District Attorney's Office. The 53-year-old victim was found by her daughters and best friend - bound with shoe laces and duct tape, gagged and wrapped in a blanket. Johnson was a mother of six and grandmother of eight who worked in a nursing home. She was pursuing her nursing license at the time of her killing. Within hours of her murder, prosecutors proved that Collins pawned two of her necklaces and sold her Lexus for drugs. Collins was previously convicted in 1995 of two separate murders. He served 25 years behind bars - only half of his sentence because of changes to California's "youthful offender" parole laws. "Darryl Collins took three innocent lives. Today's sentence isn't just about punishment, it's also about protection from this sociopath to ensure he will never walk free again," L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. "This case shows exactly what can happen when someone with a history of extreme violence is released from prison early. "We can only hope that three families who have experienced unimaginable loss find some measure of peace knowing he will never again be back in our communities."

Convicted double murderer out on parole kills South L.A. mother of 6

The Los Angeles County District Attorney says the law that allowed a man convicted of double murder out on parole contributed to a third murder of a South L.A. mother, and now, a day ahead of her killer’s sentencing, her family is speaking out. Fatima Johnson, a 53-year-old mother of six, was found dead by her daughters in her apartment on July 4, 2021. Her family grew worried after she failed to show up for work or return text messages. Johnson’s grisly murder, in which her hands were tied while she was choked or smothered to death while being wrapped in a blanket, led investigators to Darryl Lamar Collins, who had been convicted of killing two other people in 1998.
