Quick ExitOn the morning of May 5, 2026, in Covington, Washington, Kyle Cathcart called 911 claiming an intruder had broken into his home and stabbed him and his wife, Jodi Cathcart. Responding deputies found Jodi deceased in a bedroom from dozens of stab wounds. Investigations, including Ring camera footage that showed no one entering the home, led police to doubt Kyle’s story. Kyle eventually confessed to stabbing his wife while wearing her clothes to stage a robbery. He cited overwhelming pressure from job loss and a long-running lie about a non-existent $6 million lawsuit settlement as the stressors that led to the incident.
In memory of Jodi Cathcart: A devoted mother, a compassionate advocate, and a bright light whose warmth could not be extinguished.
Jodi Cathcart was described by those who knew her as a "ball of light" with a contagious laugh. She was a dedicated mother to three adopted children, aged 3,5, and 7, and a passionate advocate for the foster and adoptive communities. Her friends recall her as a "tender spirit" who spent her time encouraging others and expanding resources for families in need.
According to court documents, Kyle Cathcart attacked Jodi Cathcart in their Covington home around 6:15 a.m. on May 1, 2026. While their three children were nearby in the house, Kyle used a kitchen knife to stab Jodi approximately 48 times as she slept and eventually fought back. After the killing, Kyle attempted to stage the scene to look like a "robbery gone wrong" by scattering items from her wallet and hiding bloodied clothing in a neighbor's yard. He then inflicted superficial wounds on himself before calling 911 to report a fictional intruder.
Kyle Cathcart was arrested and charged with first-degree murder with a deadly weapon enhancement. He is currently in the King County Jail on $5 million bail. The couple's three children are reported to be in the care of close family friends. Community members have held vigils and shared tributes to Jodi's life and her contributions to the foster car community.
This case illustrates a pattern often seen in "family annihilator" or domestic homicide cases involving "financial infidelity." The suspect maintained a long-term facade of financial security ($6 million settlement) to hide the reality of job loss. The arrival of a "deadline" for a major lie often serves as a high-risk trigger for violence when the perpetrator feels they can no longer maintain the lie.
Public filings, police reports, court dockets, and related records help establish what is documented, what remains disputed, and where warnings were recorded.
The defendant is charged with Murder in the First Degree (RCW 9A.32.030(1)(a)). The filing alleges that on or about May 1, 2026, Kyle Cathcart caused the death of Jodi Cathcart with "premeditated intent."
